do we pull up floor
Asked by kate dillon from Ceredigion:
Have recently bought 19th century, empty cottage in need of restoration. Problem is we have pulled up the carpet in rather large sitting room and discovered perfect black and red quarry tiles. Problem is due to inevitable damp have been advised by local builder to pull up floor, membrane, damp proof etc. etc., Suspect tiles may be on earth floor which is normal. Do you think it's necessary to pull up these beautiful tiles or is there another way round. kate
gpslancaster says:
Your builder is right about the Damp proof course, however I would let the Tiled floor breathe first, give them a good clean with some Tile Doctor Pro-clean, rinse with water and see what happens over the next few weeks. If the floor Tiles start to show signs of Effloresence (white salts) then you have a damp problem, if nothing happens then the Tiles will just remain dull, then its time to Seal them, try 3 to 4 coats of Tile Doctor Seal and Go for a nice low sheen finish.
