Floor grout keeps breaking up
Asked by Fiona mckirdy from Edinburgh:
the grout in my ceramic floor tiles breaks up and leaves holes between the tiles this problem was apparent when I moved into the house but I have since had the floor re tiled and the same thing is happening again, can you help please?
TileProf says:
Hi Fiona, Hard to say without seeing it it could be a few different things. But firsat off all you have a movement problem, if the Tiles are okay and it the grout that is the problemm that indicates you have tiles laid onto a wooden surface or on top of Underfloor heating, the tiles if okay sound like they have been laid properly with a flexible adhesive thre grout however sounds like it has not had flexible grout and hence it keeps breaking up, replace with a good quality flexible grout if this is the case like Mapei Ultra-colour. If however a flexible grout was used and this is still happening then im suprised the Tiles havent been an issue as well because it sounds like the whole area has been laid on what is called a floating floor and you cant tile to this, the whole floor would have to come up and reset with battens and then overlaid with 15mm Marine Plywood, screwed down not nailed.
